Avatar Friday Box Office Numbers Report - A Hit $27 Million Friday

>> Saturday, December 19, 2009

After much speculation as to what Avatar's Friday box office gross might be, first day box office numbers are officially being announced for the movie, and we now have a more concrete idea as to how the movie will perform this weekend.

Avatar opened to a very strong first day box office gross of approximately $27 million, successfully shooting down various rumors that the movie would be a box office disaster. The $27 million first day gross came from 3,542 locations in the United States and Canada, and includes the $3.5 Avatar made from it's midnight showings.

This gross is a very strong showing for Avatar, and it's on it's way to nabbing the Biggest December Box Office Opening ever.  If Avatar continues it's current box office patterns, it'll be on it's way to a $80+ million opening for the 3-day weekend. This would successfully dethrone I Am Legend and it's $77 million from having the highest grossing December opening, and give it the crown to Avatar.

Whether Avatar breaks the December box office record, or not, it's $27 million from Friday alone guarantees it the Biggest Box Office Opening Ever for a 3D movie. The previous best was Pixar's Up, with $68 million, which it earned just earlier this year, on it's way to $293 million domestic.

Avatar has also been released into 106 Foreign Markets on almost 13,000 screens, 3,941 of which are 3D. This is a absolutely huge foreign release, and Avatar is expected to perform better internationally than in the United States and Canada, as do most of director James Cameron's movies. We can expect big Avatar Foreign grosses when they are released.

The movie was quite decent. You can't have Scorsese and CGI, so to speak. Well, maybe you could, but I've never seen it yet...

James Cameron is my new person to watch and study. He is transcending this earthly plane and Avatar is a manifestation of a world ready for transformation.
