2010 New Tron Legacy LightCycle Bilboard - Yellow & Blue

>> Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Walt Disney had just released a New Tron Legacy LightCycle Billboard that they debuted in Los Angeles, CA today. The new billboard is the third in a series that Disney plans on releasing every one and a half months to help add to the already massive hype for the 3D movie.

The third billboard is a progression of the last two that were released, combing the both the yellow LightCycle and the Blue Lightcycle in a single shot. If the posters continues to follow the current pattern it has been, and I beleive it will, the fourth Tron Legacy billboard will be a continuation of the these past banners.

While Tron Legacy is still more than nine months away from its official release date of  December 17th, 2010, it makes perfect sense that Disney has already put a massive advertising campaign and marketing blitz in place far in advance. The movie reportedly cost $300 million to make and possibly upwards of $360 million.

Disney is making Tron Legacy into a major motion picture event that can't be missed, and a film that must be seen in 3D, which will ,of course, amount to a larger box office gross. In addition, when it is released there will be almost double the 3D locations that were around when Avatar was released.

Below you can see the New Tron Legacy LightCycle Billboard, along with the two older ones.

Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time Final Movie Poster

Just as it was announced that Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time would get an international IMAX release, Walt Disney has just released the final movie poster for the action epic starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

While most of the other posters for the film very at least a little underwhelming, the newest and last poster is a bit of a step up from all the rest, although it keeps to the same tone and form as the others.

The poster features Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan holding both the infamous dagger in one hand and a sword in the other, as well as Gemma Arterton as Princess Tamina and Ben Kingsly as Nizam giving looks that I suppose you could say fits their character. One thing I might mention, is the fact that in the bottom corner of the poster there seems to be walking skeletons, but then again I could be mistaken.

The movie comes from Walt Disney is what looks like a clear attempt to do for deserts what Pirates of the Caribbean did for oceans. Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time has a $150 million budget without including advertising or prints, so the film will have to open to at least solid numbers to become a sucess for the studio.

You can see the newest as well as the final movie poster for Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time below.

Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time is set to be released to theaters everywhere during the box office blockbuster of May, on the 28th of this year.

Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time Gets An IMAX Experience

The IMAX Corporation just announced today that Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time will be getting the IMAX treatment when it is released on May 28th, 2010. Its release is said to be for international IMAX screens, and is planed for a limited run at the mega theater locations.

The film's limited international IMAX release will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with IMAX DMR technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

"Once again our expanded network of IMAX locations is enabling us to offer moviegoers around the world more compelling content ideally suited to The IMAX Experience," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "The success of our international theatre network is a key component of our growth, and we are delighted to secure this highly anticipated summer title for our international exhibitor partners."

"We're revved up that moviegoers throughout our international territories will have the opportunity to experience this epic adventure in IMAX theatres," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Walt Disney Pictures is continuing to add blockbuster releases to our growing slate, and it's a particular treat with 'Prince of Persia' as it kicks off our relationship with hit maker Jerry Bruckheimer."

This is good news in terms of box office potential for the Walt Disney released, Mike Newell directed, and Jerry Bruckheimer directed action fantasy epic. IMAX showing typically cost signifigantly more than the average ticket prices, which means higher box office grosses.

Not only that, but IMAX is very popular and showings on the mega size format far outpace that of regular screenings of a movie. Even though it's not yet known how many IMAX locations Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time will be showing at, it should be able to at least help the movie make back its $150 million budget.

Prince Of Persia: The Sands of Time is set to be released to theaters worldwide on May 28th, 2010.

3D Movies Spike Box Office Revenue - 3D Cinema Is Growing Overwhelming Fast

The MPAA has just sent out a very interesting press release on the effect that 3D movies are having at the box office. The release states that after years of attendance level drops at the box office, 3D movies seem to be enticing people to return to theaters, and as a result yearly box office revenue are increasing dramatically with each passing year.

Not only that, but theaters are also rushing to add additional 3D screens as well as all the latest technology to their locations at an overwhelming rate. The number of theaters are installing 3D capabilities to become 3D cinemas are increasing by 100's of  percentages in the past year.

While the MPAA's annual report on the Theatrical Market and the booming industry of the 3D Cinema is very interesting to read, the numbers come as no surprise Avatar, a 3D movie became the highest grossing movie of all time, the newly released 3D Alice In Wonderland opened to huge worldwide box office numbers, and as a result studios have flooded their release schedules with 3D movies.

You can read the MPAA's full press release below.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 10, 2010 WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE CONTINUES TO SOAR; U.S. ADMISSIONS ON THE RISE
3D gives a boost to box office growth Los Angeles
The Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA) today released its annual Theatrical Market Statistics Report for 2009. The report shows that global box office receipts reached an all time high of $29.9 billion, an increase of 7.6% over 2008 and almost 30% from 2005. The U.S./Canada market reached $10.6 billion, an increase of more than 10%, and International receipts increased 6.3% to $19.3 billion in 2009. The 3D market gave the U.S./Canada box office a boost accounting for 11% of the total compared to just 2% in 2008. With 20 films released in 3D compared to just eight in 2008, higher value entertainment contributed significantly to box office revenues.

“While the motion picture industry continues to face tremendous challenges elsewhere in our business, we’re reminded again this year that the cinema is the heart and soul of our industry and it is thriving,” said Bob Pisano, President and Interim CEO of the MPAA.

Ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada rose more than 5.5% from 2008, the first admissions increase in two years. Per capita ticket purchases in the U.S. and Canada also increased 4.6% to 4.3 tickets per person, the first significant increase since 2002. Sales were fueled by repeated visits to the cinema by frequent moviegoers – those who go to the movies once a month or more and who make up only 10% of the population – who bought half of all tickets sold in 2009.

“Four straight years of box office growth– the last three each setting a new record – show the enormous appetite audiences continue to have for great and entertaining movies in the best way to enjoy them – on a big screen with a big crowd,” said John Fithian, President and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners.

At the end of 2009 there were more than 16,000 digital cinema screens worldwide, up 86% from the end of 2008, a net gain of more than 7,000 screens. The fastest growing sector of digital screens is 3D. The number of digital 3D screens worldwide more than tripled in 2009, reaching 8,989, or about 6% of screens in the world.

“Digital technology is the foundation on which 3D has been built. Together, digital presentation and 3D hold the promise of a dramatic game change in moviemaking and movie-going. The global film audience is voting with its feet, and those feet are planted firmly in the direction of local cinemas that have the latest technology,” said Pisano.

While box office revenues and admissions surged, films produced by U.S. production companies declined over the past three years. In 2009, the number of U.S. produced films released in domestic theaters decreased 12%, the first decline since 2003. The decline is attributable in significant part to labor issues affecting the industry in 2007-08, the recession and the challenges to investment recovery due to rampant content theft, and the decline in DVD sales.

Alice In Wonderland's Monday Box Office Gross - $9 Million - Sets 4-Day Record

>> Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Alice In Wonderland Monday box office numbers have just come in, and they show that if it can continue on its set path and reach its projected ending total, it won't nearly be the front-loaded movie it was expected to be.

On Monday March 8th 2010, Alice In Wonderland grossed $9.008 million from 3,728 locations across North American box office territories, for a per theater average of $2,416.

Now, even though this only ranks 63rd among all-time Monday grosses, and 32ond among non-holiday Monday grosses, Alice's Monday earnings are actually very strong, and could even be considered huge.

Some of you might remember that Avatar had a much smaller opening than Alice In Wonderland did, yet it grossed more than $16 million its first Monday at the box office, so you might be wondering why $9 million is such a good number for Disney's latest film.

Well, it's March, kids are still in school, parents aren't off of work, and it's also not a month that is typically big at the box office. In fact, when you look at the 63 other films that had better Monday grosses than Alice In Wonderland, almost all of them are movies that were released in the summer blockbuster season, or during the Christmas season, both of which are the biggest times at the box office.

Outside those two seasons when studios release their big earners to the box office, Alice In Wonderland's Monday gross actually ranks 4th, only behind Avatar ($11.6 Mil), Rush Hour 2 ($9.4 Mil), and The Bourne Ultimatum ($9.13 Mil).

So wit that said, Alice In Wonderland is doing very well at the box office, and since the movie is in 3D it will only give more encouragement to other studios to beef up their 3D release lineup.

Alice In Wonderland's four-day domestic box office total now stands at $125 million, which ranks 14th among all-time four day grosses at the box office, but it actually ranks no. 1 outside of the Summer and Winter season.

Whether or not this proves that Tim Burton's latest directorial will have "long legs" remains to been seen, but we'll be able to know for sure when next weekend's box office results come in.

Tron Legacy Movie Trailer 2010 3D - Tron 2.0

Walt Disney has just released the very first 2010 Tron Legacy Movie Trailer, the movie also known to some as Tron 2.0 The trailer was shown in front of Disney's 3D motion picture Alice In Wonderland, as it was just released to theaters last Friday.

We already knew that Tron Legacy's first trailer would debut when Alice was released, since both movies come from Disney, both are in 3D, and the studio announced that it would. The trailer, as well as the entire Tron 2 movie is really meant to be seen in 3D, but you can still see the non-3D, HD Trailer here online.

Now with that said, some of you might remember seeing already seeing a trailer for Tron Legacy, but that was simply Test Footage that was made by director Joseph Kosinski to get the movie green-lit by Disney. And according to the director, although that footage was used by Disney to advertise the movie at last year's Comic-Con, it won't be even used in the final cut of the film.

Now with that said, even outside of 3D the trailer for Tron 2 looks absolutely amazing, you can simply imagine how the trailer will look in 3D, much less the movie. Plus it's still more than 10 months away from it's official release date of December 17, 2010, which also means that all the special effects work isn't even finished.

While many marvel at the details in the Tron world along with the special effects and concept art,  I've got to say that I really like the controlled tone and feel in the real world that is outside of Tron as well.

Draft Punk is scoring Tron Legacy, and I've got to say that it fits very nicely in the trailer, and I'm almost certain this is another enticing reason to see the film. It will be very interesting to see what the entire soundtrack sounds like, as well as how it fits with the entire movie.

In January we did a write up and analysis on Ton Legacy , its budget and box office potential. If you'd like to read it, we've included a link.

2010 Academy Award Winners & Their Box Office Grosses

>> Monday, March 8, 2010

Now that the Official Academy Award Winners have been announced for 2010, we thought it would be a good idea to make a list of how each movie performed at box office, both domestically and internationally.

Now, even though I personally don't pay strict attention the Academy Awards.  Whether a movie wins or not, does not entice me to see a particular film, but the Oscar Ceremonies do have an effect on the box office for the pictures that win, so therefore any box office analyst should pay attention to the numbers in this regard.

For instance, Jeff Bridges won the Best Leading Actor Award last night for Crazy Heart, which means that the movie will likely see a rise in theater counts as well as see an substantial boost at the box office next weekend.

Another example is The Hurt Locker who has already finished its box office run, and subsequently has been released to the Home Entertainment Market on DVD and Blu-Ray, where it has been performing solidly week after week.

The movie won six awards last night, including Best Picture, and Best Director for Kathryn Bigelo, which will undoubtedly give the picture a sales boost regardless of the fact that it had already been in release for more than three months.

In comparison, Avatar might not see any type of box office jump (nor does it need it), following its three Oscar wins last night, mainly due to the fact that it lost on most of the quote unquote Big Awards to The Hurt Locker.

Below you can look at how all the winners at the 2010 Academy Awards performed at the box office, along with each movie's respective budget.
